NaNoWriMo Index - 10-21-19 Kick Off event. | ||
I
don't get out much but when I do I'm up for some fun. Moon was in Leo. There was a Scorpio Venus Trine Pisces Neptune transit. I wore my polymer clay jewelry. Since my weight loss some rings were too big. Ain't complaining. The people were friendly and I got to exchange "buddy" information for the NaNoWriMo website. |
||
The
Bindery is a lovely book store and displays the books in
chronological order, which is interesting. One can wander through a history of writing that way. The vibe is very welcoming: bright, clean, the staff friendly and informative. I wish I had money to buy some books while I was there. What spare change I did have went to the raffle. |
||
Last
year at the raffle I won three out of four tickets. Not so lucky this time but it was all for the good cause of raising money for the San Francisco chapter of NaNoWriMo, to cover their costs, the extra goes to the national chapter. Oh, the Bindery has WiFi for guests. The staff member who gave me the password said, "It's not a very good WiFi." I thought it was good enough for me to sent pix to Facebook. |
||
I
didn't send these pictures of the bookstore to Facebook but I did want
to share just how lovely this book store is. It's a multi-use space and there are events going on through the year. "The Arcana Project has added about 10,000 titles to Booksmith’s existing inventory. It is designed to assemble an incomplete, constantly evolving index of converging and diverging stories that lead towards our literary, cultural moment." |
||
Ah,
Rachel and Barrington showed up. I was so early there was no one in this
back event area when I got there. I parked myself just to the right of where they are standing. There was a bar that served various beverages, both alcohol and non-alcohol. Rachel and Barrington brought munchies. I could not indulge in anything because I'm being Keto-Good. Sigh.. |
||
I
found a space on the other side of the room from where I sat last time.
I now wish I had parked by the mic and the raffle bags so I could have
taken pictures of the people who were there. Where I was located I saw the backs of people's heads. Rachel and Barrington walked everyone though the new website and answered questions about how to find different sections. No speakers this year other than that. |
||
Here
was the host of the Bindey. I forgot to catch his name. He gave a bit of the history about the bookstore and that this is the third year that NaNoWriMo SF chapter has used this space for an event. |
||
Later
Rachel let everyone know that DropBox is hosting "Thank God It's Over"
event, as they did last year (which I did not attend) on November 21,
2019 at
Tacolicious. I believe it's the Mission location. Barrington sold raffle tickets and set up a creative table for folks to draw their book cover if they wished. Rachel asked everyone to meet and talk with at least two people. I think I spoke with five. All nice folks. |
||
You
know I had a good time chatting with other writers because I got NO
photos of the crowd. There were first timers and some who have done NaNoWriMo for 10 years and more. I had young people approach me where I was parked in my rollator, as well as old timers. We exchanged NaNoWriMo "handles" so we can be "buddies" on the site. |
||
Remind
me next time to have ParaTransit pick me up 15 minutes after an event
ends and not a half hour. Eric, my driver showed up right on time but waiting on a deserted part of Haight Street was a little creepy. I thought there'd be at least some street people hanging out but it's gotten hella gentrified. Just millennials going to the pizza place next door for late muchies. |
||
So that's my 2019
NaNoWriMo Kick Off party report. I enjoyed myself more than I
anticipated. Interestingly enough, the two people I spoke with the most:
Lorah and Matty Writer were both working on SciFi. So we got to talk
alot about that genre. Another bunch of folks were talking about Dhalgren, which I re-read recently when I got a three novel deal of Samuel R. Delany's work from Amazon Kindle. I suggested China Mieville and Jeff Noon and then just told this fellow Jesse to check out my book index for the writers I've enjoyed. Some not all, obviously. Here's Samuel R. Delany's books we were discussing. |
||
Dhalgren,
"Samuel R. Delany’s masterwork, which in 1975 opened a new door for what
science fiction could mean. A labyrinth of a novel, it raises questions
about race, sexuality, identity, and art, but gives no easy answers, in a
city that reshapes itself with each step you take." quote from Amazon. Thought I'd add this to the Book Index since we were talking about it at the 2019 NaNoWriMo Kick-Off party on 10-21-19. |
||
This
is the three novel set I was speaking about and I couldn't remember all
the titles. Volume One: Babel-17, Nova, and Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand I had to add these to my Book Index which I need to update or organize. Maybe I'll do that during the upcoming Mercury Retrograde. NaNoWriMo folks: take advantage of the time between November 1 and November 20th to RE thing... Rewrite, review, research... etc. |
